WWLW: Envelope Flair

Yes, it's true.
The Merry Mommas LOVE envelope flair! I mean, we focus LOTS on what's inside that envelope, but it's nice to give that outside some love, too!
You may be asking yourself,
"WHAT IN THE WORLD is envelope flair?"
Well, it's all the little things on an envelope that add that extra WOW!
Here, let us show you...

STAMPS

United States Postal Service offers some really great holiday stamps.  They can add that extra, "Why, yes, I did stand in line for an hour to get the cute Charlie Brown stamps!" to any envelope. (Or, I sent my husband. Twice. because the first time he only bought a book, which is exactly 120 stamps too few.) :)

Zazzle has TONS of unique options! Just search "Christmas" or "Holiday" stamps.

And you can customize them with your own pictures! How fun would it be to give a sneak peak to your card ON YOUR ENVELOPE! And sometimes you can't choose just one pic, this gives you the option of selecting just one more!

RETURN ADDRESS

Stamps - You can fancy up your address with ink stamps!  There is literally hundreds of thousands of different places you can get stamps, but we headed to Etsy to find some fun ones for you!

Labels - If you order cards from some of the major online retailers, many of them will have the option to add address labels.  Again, this is a darling way to give the receiver a little sneak peek at what's inside!
OUTSIDE

INSIDE

This card and the address return label are from Tiny Prints.

Embossed - If you are a little more on the formal side, you may choose to emboss your envelopes.  We love the distinguished look of an embossed envelope.  Feel free to send us your cards! (We're serious!)  Paper Source has a great selection of embossers.

 WASHI TAPE

Washi tape can be a bit intimidating, which is silly, because the whole point of it is to add some fun to your various projects without the stress. Take a look at some of things we found!

I mean, let's just discuss her entire style of envelope addressing. Click on that link because she does an entire post on her tips. We LOVE that she used a VARIETY of stamps! Darling. Her handwriting? AMAZING. And that washi tape adds an extra pop! It is definitely on this momma's list this year!

If you use more of a traditional addressing system (read: white labels) you can always add more washi tape for that extra pop of fun! You could even just use a tiny piece on the back of the envelope as a seal. And done!

See, you totally love ENVELOPE FLAIR now too, don't you! :)

Know what we LOVE? When y'all leave us comments! Seriously, we can't blog about what you LOVE unless you tell us. So share the merry and spread the love...

WWLW: Photoshoot Planning

It's that time y'all. Most of you are smack dab in the middle of photo shoot planning and execution. And we are here to help you. Because we really don't want you looking/feeling like this...

So, we've taken the best of our best (or so we think) to put all in one place for you today for the...

One to Two Months Before:

1. Decide on Clothes, Shoes and Accessories - You want a winning wardrobe!

Start shopping, whether you are closet shopping, on-line shopping or mall shopping - start. Find one thing to start with - maybe a scarf for Momma or a bow tie for your baby boy - and work to find the items to coordinate with it.
2. Props - If you are going to use any props - cool couch, balloons, over sized letters, tricycles, or a wagon - start your search now.

Two Weeks Before:

1. Location - Because you know what look/feel/theme you are going for (see above) you probably also know a few spots to take these types of photos (or you have consulted with your photographer), so now is the time to do drive byes to check on things like height of grass in a park or field, hours of operation, payment (if applicable). Also, there are some locations that must be reserved, don't forget to check.
2. Hair & Makeup - I have to admit, I have never had my hair or make up done for a photo shoot, but I think I might! If you want these types of services, book them now. (I do admit, I do get my eyebrows a couple of days before photo shoots...I'm so fancy like that! ;))

One Week Before:

1. Try on clothes - Kids grow fast and sometimes things just look lots different on...so go ahead and do a quick dress rehearsal. This is also a good time to iron. I swear, my ironing board only comes out for photo shoots!
2. Touch base with your photographer - Give your photographer a call or email to reconfirm times and location.
3. Talk it up! - Start talking to the kiddos (and maybe the significant other) about the photo shoot. Remind them how fun it will be to be a model and discuss expectations. We talk about listening to the photographer,  doing what we ask when we ask and reminding them that if they do well, they will get a treat! Hey, we are all about bribery here! And treats can be candy, stickers, drive around the neighborhood with the windows down listening to Frozen T. Swift...whatever works!
4. Double check your picks! - We always send texts to each other with our various wardrobe options for one final round of feedback.

Day Before:

1. Set out clothes and accessories -I set out everything, and I do mean everything (including unmentionables...don't get caught with a black bra and white shirt! EEK!). It will make the next day go smoother and if you forgot something you will have a little while to run to Target.
2. Pack
     a. Clothes - You may have all the clothes on your body and this step isn't necessary...but you may have a wardrobe change or a scarf or something, so go ahead pack it. {And, just maybe I made the girls ride to a photo shoot in their unmentionables because I didn't want the picture clothes wrinkled...just maybe. I can't say for sure, but maybe! ;))
     b. Props - Go ahead and load the car. Remember, you want tomorrow to be STRESS free. We recently did Millicent's 3 year (tear) pictures and the car was full of pumpkins.
     c. Goodies - Get the treats ready! Stickers, lollipops, whatever.  Have it ready to reward that great behavior. Also, pack water, snacks and wipes. Hungry kids (and adults) do not take good pictures!
     d. Toiletries - Don't forget the hair brushes, makeup and tissues.

Day of:

1. Be on time! Y'all nothing stresses me out more than being late. I hate it. So I make it a point to be early to photo shoots. Photographers are busy, lighting matters and a stressed face is not pretty, so be on time.
2. Be reasonable - Remember that all parties involved - kids, mom, dad, photographer, etc - are people and we all have good and bad days and we all have things we are capable of doing. (Don't expect a 2 year old to do a 3 hour shoot or take pics during nap time.)
3. HAVE FUN! Seriously, have fun. Laugh. Enjoy being in the moment! HAVE FUN!
4. Be prepared... which leads us to...

What to bring:

We have several general items that we bring to every single photo shoot:

Image sources: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

1. Safety pins - you never know what's going to need fixing. Sometimes kids are at an in between size and you need to tighten up some pants, a dress, or shirt.
2. Lip gloss - This is pretty self-explanatory and not unusual but I like to keep it in my bag, not just for me but for the girls, too. It's the perfect bribe!
3.  Extra hair flair (bobby pins, rosettes, headbands, clips) - You never know when the weather is going to change, fly-aways are going to occur, or kids are going to hate what you picked out. Be prepared and bring EXTRA.
4. Lint brush - You know, because of lint.
5. Bug spray - Especially in Texas. Especially in summer. Who am I kidding - ALL STINKING YEAR. #wehatemosquitoes
6. Flip flops/extra shoes - You won't be in every picture and you may have to trek through some interesting land to get to your space - don't ruin your good shoes, just bring extras!

We also have some items specifically for our small kiddos...

 Image sources: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 /

1. Baby wipes - It never fails that someone plays in dirt, picks up trash, or finds a piece of melted chocolate. Have baby wipes. They also serve as a great distraction when needed. Just let Tommy pull every single wipe from the bag - you can always put them back in and use them (especially on third kids). ;)
2. Candy (also known as bribes) - Grab some hard candy. If your photographer is good (and smart) he/she will have this covered. Make sure it's not chocolate or anything that will melt/run in their hands. We like smarties, jelly beans or fruit chews. As noted above, lip gloss is an excellent bribe for tiny girls.
3. Books/toys - Have something anything that will keep them occupied when they aren't in the picture. We've found books and toys helpful, but so is your phone or iPod.
4. Happy spray  -  Neither of the Mommas have actually tried this, but we have heard that it works. Just bring a small spray bottle full of water (and maybe even glitter) (I said maybe) (#wehateglitter) and tell the kiddos it's magic happy spray. Sounds silly, but hey #whateverworks.

And soon enough, our kids will become tweens/teens and we imagine that they may have a different set of "must haves"...

1 / 2 /  3

1. Special drink - We don't give our kids much besides water or milk and I don't anticipate Starbucks becoming a regular occurrence. It may be fun to drive through pre-photo shoot to get the older kids something before pictures begin. (or as a incentive for after the shoot). #havewementionedwelikebribes
2. Phone/Music - Not many of us ever travel without our phones these days, but make sure you have it especially if there are portions where kids aren't involved in pictures. This is a great way to keep them happy.
3. Hairspray - Yes, I did just post a picture of Aqua Net. It's the best. Says my MaMaw. Fly aways, happen. Wind happens. Wardrobe changes mess up hair. Just bring hair spray.

So there you have it. Our crazy is exposed. And if we thought a little longer, I'm sure we could come up with more items that you always need to bring - the ones we listed were no brainers!! We love this stuff y'all - and if you are stressing out... don't. Email us, comment below and let us know what's stressing you out and maybe we can help!

WWLW & WWDLW: October

Y'all, it is almost OCTOBER. I know this isn't a news flash to any of you...but man, I have a LOVE and a DON'T LOVE relationship with this month...and here's why! (And this is Merry Momma Cindy.)

DON'T LOVE - Pumpkin Spice Latte. I can't even stand the smell of pumpkin spice. At. All. And who wants to drink a pumpkin? NOT ME. YUCK! {Yes, I realize I may loose my middle class, middle age mom card on this one, but I. Just. Can't. Even.}

LOVE - Pumpkins and kids in pumpkin patches! You have to will yourself to be sad around pumpkins and kids in a pumpkin patch. They remind me of small town America. With fall festivals and pumpkin bowling and candy and fun. I love pumpkins!

LOVE FOOTBALL! Who doesn't love college football...and man, THOSE AGGIES!

Myles Garrett <3

DON'T LOVE WORKING ON FOOTBALL SATURDAY - I have a great job and it super fun, but it does require me to work some Saturdays...and well:

LOVE CELEBRATING THIS GAL! Millie's birthday is mid October and we have had such fun celebrating her over the past 4 years.

DON'T LOVE that we have no more babies! While I love love love the stage we are currently in, I did tear up LOTS this evening as Millicent walked out of the playroom holding a pad of paper and dressed in a bakers outfit asking me what I wanted to eat and then wrote real letters on the pad. No more babies here!

LOVE - Planning. I don't think it is a secret that I love to plan...everything! For goodness sakes, we did a post on how we organize our Christmas Shopping.

DON'T LOVE - PLANNING COUNTDOWN THINGS. I don't love those things at all...they make me nervous and anxious. I'm not sure why...but they do...but HEY, THEY ARE A GOOD REMINDER TO GET YOUR CHRISTMAS CARD READY! (And we can't wait for your submissions!)

Happy October y'all!

WWLW: Jen and Ang

Hey friends!

Katy and I have some friends that we are just IN LOVE with and honestly, we would be just horrible people if we didn't introduce you to them. Maybe some of you know them...they are kinda famous. Just a tad famous in fact. And they may not really be our friends, but we know if they met us they would totally fall in love with us too.

First up...Angie Smith:
Isn't she beautiful!
And she's just as pretty on the inside.

We first "met" Angie through her blog - Bring the Rain. Go ahead, go read it now. You're back! Her story is moving, isn't it. We both have read her book, "I Will Carry You" and were captivated by her unwavering love for Jesus, even in the rain. And then we heard her speak at dotMom. Y'all, this woman can PREACH! Her talk was titled, "Evaluating the Subtext of Parenting". I won't rewrite her entire speech her, but two of the things she said that have stuck with me are "My children are not props in my performance" and "My child, you are NOT an inconvenience to me". Now that's some good stuff.

We fell a little deeper in love with good ol' Ang this summer when we did her bible study Seamless.

Katy and I really wanted to the study and we decided to invite our friends and their friends...and y'all...we were blessed by the study and this group of ladies. If you have done ZERO or HUNDREDS of bible studies, this one is for you.

Love these ladies!

And now...Jen Hatmaker:
She's beautiful too...inside and out!

We also "met" Jen through the blogging world. Go read her "about"...she just a cool chick. She has some awesome posts that have gone viral...one of our most favorite is Worst End of School Year Mom Ever, we can totally relate! And this post was pretty AWESOME too. She and her family are also pretty famous from their TV show - My Big Family Renovation. And she's writes books, NBD. I read 7 a few years ago and really could relate to her feeling of TOO MUCH. She has a bible study associated with it now and Katy and I are thinking of doing it. Anyone out there done the 7 Bible Study?

And now she has gone and wrote another book...one that is on the bestsellers list:

I am only a few chapters in, but goodness, it is great. Buy it here! And then this paragraph, "There is a biblical benchmark I now use. We will refer to this criterion for every hard question, big idea, topic, assessment of our own obedience, every 'should' or 'should not' and 'will' and 'will not' we ascribe to God, every theological sound bite. Here it is: If it isn't also true for a poor single Christian mom in Haiti, it isn't true." (Chapter 3, page 18)

Thanks for indulging us as we talk about our blog crushes...we think Ang and Jen are pretty cool and hope you do too!

If you have read any of their books or blog posts, we'd love to hear what you think! We love comments!

WWDLW: Edition Hair

So this is an anti WWLW post, not necessarily something we hate, but something we don't particularly love.

(Well, I haven't actually confirmed this non-love with Merry Momma C, but let's go with it).

Hair.

I do not love fixing hair.

And it's not that I don't love it - it's that I'm not particularly good at it, which is ironic because we have a lot of hair in this family.

I have mastered a few things: pony tails (both regular AND side) (I mean, clearly), piggies, top knots, the occasional hair tuck in a head band and of course the curl.

But then again, I've been using a curling iron longer than the people that will be freshmen in college this year have been alive. I know. #oldie

Oh and anything with "messy" in front of it.

Occasionally, I will have a surge of hair crafting super powers and do something great in a mediocre kind of way.

Now don't worry about my girls - they are surrounded by people that do great hair. They come home all the time with fancy new dos and they actually prefer the "been running around all day while washing my hair with glue, glitter and paint supplies" look.  But now that Emmy is in kindergarten, her days of hair playing in class are done.

So I'm determined to learn a thing or two.

But then Pinterest is all...

Seriously. What happened to just an actual ribbon?

So I searched and searched and searched. An hour later I found two pins that I think I'm going to try...

Neither lead to a real webpage - or at least one that Pinterest would let me see without warning... but they look easy enough and should be a quick enough process that Emmy will sit still.

And just as I was about to give up all this hair research, I found it...or rather HER. A mom that gets me (and starts her post with snarky sarcasm.)

You can find the actual tutorials here.

Happy hair fixing friends!

WWLW: Props - Balloons

Last week we discussed our love of PROPS! So we are going to continue that trend and for a few weeks you will get to read about all the props we love on What We Love Wednesday. We think props can add such a fun element to a photo shoot. One of our favorite props is a balloon! We originally posted this the information below way back in 2013, but the info is still relevant. Enjoy our throw back post!

Nobody can be un-cheered with a balloon.
~ Winnie the Pooh

It's true. Balloons just evoke happiness. They are one of those quintessential pieces of childhood - they just make people happy. You can't help but smile when you see them. They represent such a freedom and they are simply just fun. So, today we bring you the balloon. In every shape, size and color!

Katy: Our first photoshoot with Sarah was way back in April 2010. I was the Momma of 1.5 and had only taken pics of Radley at... gasp... Sears. (I know, I know). So, I knew I wanted to do a few pics with something "extra" but to be honest, I had not honed my picture taking obsession skills much at this point. Then I thought about using red balloons. I just pictured him in jeans, a white button down and cute boat shoes holding a bunch of red balloons on a railroad track.

(Because clearly that is where all of those things would be grouped together.)

And I still love this image today!

In keeping with tradition, I also wanted to use balloons for Emmy's 2 year photoshoot. I had seen this balloon wall on pinterest and fell in love with the idea of making a wall out of balloons as a backdrop for her. I also found this adorable rainbow colored chevron dress that was so playful and would work so well with the look I was going for.

And then picture day arrived. And a monsoon happened just as we were about to do this last series. And the monsoon brought thunder. And the two-year old did not like thunder. So we had tears. Lots of tears. (Should I remind you of tip #4 of our recap) We brought out the sucker and things got better.

And then we got "THE shot". And the time and energy spent on setting up those 50+ balloons was worth it! (Thanks, Sarah!)

Cindy: As I looked through our photo shoots, I have to admit that I was a little shocked that I have only done ONE photo shoot with balloons, but it is a great one!  These pictures are from Annaliese's 2 year photo shoot.  I love the whimsical feel the first picture gives.  While we all know that most children don't run through the woods wearing a fancy dress and carrying balloons that match said dress, it's fun to pretend and get caught up in the emotions the picture evokes - childhood, carefree, fun.  The second picture is great because the balloons add a fun (but not distracting) pop of color - and y'all...that face! Love it, and her!

 {Top 5 Reasons Why We LOVE Balloons!}
  1. Inexpensive - Seriously, you can't find props much cheaper than this! And while we are aware of the great helium shortage in America (yes, that's a real thing), you can use balloons in lots of different ways and not have to pay for the helium.
  2.  Colorful - What a great way to add a pop of ANY color to a photo.
  3. Fun - Yes. Balloons are fun. {F} {U} {N} {!}
  4. Unexpected - I don't think most of us think, yep, I should totally take pictures with balloons...unless of course you are on Pinterest all day every day.  They add an unexpected surprise to photos.  Use them!
  5. Celebration - Balloons represent celebrations and we love celebrations. In fact, we pretty much believe that everyday is a celebration and try to live that way.
And for your viewing pleasure, we want to highlight some of our
~FAVORITE~ photographers and their work with balloons!  Enjoy!

These beautiful images are from Butterfly Chaser Photography.
(We think you all know of our love of the monochromatic look!!)

These darling images are from Whimsy & Style Photography.
(Cute girl, precious shoes and a fun dress - the Merry Mommas are in!)

This collage is from Munchkins and Mohawks Photography!
(Again with the monochromatic look - LOVE!)

We adore the celebration this cutie is having with her balloons!

Y'all.  TO DIE FOR. We love love love this image from Peekaboo Photography.
(And yes, this might not be an inexpensive prop...but WHO CARES!)
